At some point in our lives we’ve witnessed or even taken part in some sort of a trend. For a decade now, trends seem to stand out a bit more than they did 20 years ago. A huge trend that has evolved in our culture is Anorexia Nervosa. This has become a real issue. Young girls, starting as young as ten years old, are worrying about how they look and how much they weigh. These young girls go to school and are quickly judged by others based on their appearance. They go home and starve themselves to lose weight. Another trend that’s gained more ground recently is to get a feeding tube in order to cut back calories and fat. A lot of this has to do with how celebrities are portrayed in the media. You look at billboards and the only women in sight are those with tiny waists and size double zero. This is so damaging to young women when they’re told they have to look a certain way to be desirable in a society where a woman’s value seems to only be placed on her good looks.
Using the word “trend” feels minimizing to the severity of these issues. It’s a “trend” to look like a Victoria’s Secret model. It’s a “trend” to over-sexualize women. These eating disorders will only lessen when our society starts to push back and represent all women as beautiful no matter if they’re a size 0, 6, 10, or 18. We need to stop basing women’s value on outward appearance alone. Only then can we make progress toward protecting our daughters and granddaughters from such a harmful worldview. We want them to grow up learning to love themselves without self-loathing.
