Many of us have been in a drunken state before, right? But how many of us have driven while drunk? Approximately 30% of people will be in a car accident involving alcohol. Each year, 16,000 people are killed due to alcohol-related accidents.

Most people don’t realize the repercussions of getting a DUI until after they go to jail or go through detox (or both). One of these repercussions is that it makes it more difficult to get auto insurance. But there’s a remedy called an SR22—a document which obligates the insurance company to notify the state if your auto insurance cancels but gives you the ability to have auto insurance. Your license will get suspended up to a year or longer depending on your BAC (Blood Alcohol Content). It’s mandatory for you to have an interlock in your vehicle for the length of your probation.

Depending on where you plan to travel, you’ll be considered a felon and will need to prove to that country or province that you’re not a threat to their society. Canada is very picky about this, and won’t allow you to enter until you prove to them that you’re not a felon.
